Hello,
As you can see, I'm new to this forum and appreciate any help you guys can provide. I'm 18 (going to turn 19 over the summer), and am quite concerned about what's going on with my hair.
I used to have very thick and coarse hair when I started high school. When I was 15, I started growing my hair longer, and because I had some dandruff problems I started using some strong dandruff shampoo (Denorex). Over the next year I noticed that my hair had gotten a lot thinner, and was falling out at an alarming rate. Most of the hair loss focused on the top of my head. I dismissed it as symptoms of the dandruff or side effects of the shampoo, and when the dandruff stopped being so intense I assumed that my problems with the hair loss would stop there.
Over the next two years my hair slowly and steadily started getting very thin, to the point where with my number 7 buzz I can see a great deal of my scalp with some direct lighting. Although both my dad and his father are generally bald, they experienced their hair loss when they were around thirty, and they both have the typical male baldness pattern.
The hair that's directly around my widow's peak and at my hair line is still relatively thick. Even my hair along the sides and the back seem thicker than the hair on top of my head. I feel thinning at the back/top portion of my head and a spot right next to the thick spot surrounding my widow's peak, although there is a general thinness that exists on the top part of my scalp. I can't really notice a receding hair line, which leads me to believe that it's not genetic.
I still use shampoo and conditioner designed for flaky scalp but approved for daily use every day. I still have a little dandruff, but it's under control because of the shampoo. I don't usually feel stressed, and when I first started noticing hair loss I definitely had very little stress in my life. Now, I do rub my hair quite a bit as a habit, which I hear may cause the symptoms I'm experiencing.
What's really bothering me is that at a young age I had exceptionally thick hair which has now dwindled down considerably. I do have more body hair than average, but I doubt that would actually contribute to what I'm experiencing. I hope that I can figure out what's going on and stop it before it gets worse.
Thanks in advance.
