I have always kept my hair short, a #1 every 2 weeks, now that i havent had my hair cut in almost a month I am investigating it. In your experience of hair loss, what category would you put this under? The only reason I have stalled going to the derm is that I went to my gp last week and he said there was nothing unusual with my scalp and recommemded i took nizoral for a dry scalp. The strange thing is where seems to be balding, its not at the front of the hairline but slightly behind, I hope these pictures help someone give their opinion, im 19 and can't really afford propecia

does propecia help you keep the hair in these areas though?
Judging from the photos there might be the chance that this is the start of the balding process. In my opinion it still seems fairly mild and its a good point to start with a treatment. Propecia or finasteride (the ingredient of propeica) can usually slow the process of balding. To focus your question if Propecia can keep this hair it is very hard to say since genes mostly win the upper hand. According from my personal empirical evidence from many friends however who taken this substance I am very confident that you also will be able to sort of keep this hair for the next time.
For someone in your age I understand that Propecia is hard to afford. Just take Proscar which contains 5 mg finasteride instead of 1 mg like Propecia at the same price. You need to cut Proscar in 4 pieces and you get the same amount for a lot less money. Mark who hosts this forum will surely give his opinion about your pictures too to give a clearer and more professional perspective.
Note however: Even with the opinion from Mark you should ALWAYS consider an appointment with a doctor who examines your scalp and who tells you about the cons and pros from this drug. Don’t just go off and buy it from the internet, sometimes the legal way simply is the best way.
Man, Lain nails it yet again.
Niall, Dr. Rassman just came into my office and looked at your photos and he immediately said "he's got a frontal balding with a persistent forelock. How old his he? 19? He should get on Finasteride immediately as that may reverse if he does".
So that's a nice definitive answer for you. Haha.
As Lain said, you may be able to find 5mg Finasteride and cut the pills into 1/4ths. This is what I do as it's much cheaper than Propecia and still effective in the treatment of hair loss. I know it may seem expensive, but it's much cheaper than potentially having a hair transplant down the road.
If you have any other questions, feel free to post them or send me a private message.

thanks a lot for that--very informative. I'm just wondering if you could tell me, does propecia stop hair loss along the hairline, like will it stop hair loss in the receding area, because presently, these are at the stage were they seem to be a white colour.
secondly, does anyone have any recommendations of where to buy your finasteride, either propecia or proscar?
lol that was nice timing, i was just about to comment! would the finasteride cut into 1/4s be as effective as propecia? also wondering if ur 1 of the unlucky who it doesn't seem to work on lol will the shedding phase still take place and will this grow back even if the propecia isnt effective?
btw, really appreciate the help!! Thanks a lot

Finasteride doesn't affect everyone exactly the same, so I can't say that it'll stop your hair loss for sure. But in clinical trials it was best at stopping hair loss in the crown, but for some people it does work in the area that you seem to be losing hair. The only way to find out for sure is for you to try it, and since there isn't anything else that works to prevent hair loss, it's the only thing I could advise you to try.
Judging by your IP address, you seem to be in the UK. I'm not sure what the law is there as far as buying drugs, but you may be able to order them online. The other option is to get a prescription from a doctor.
Propecia is just 1mg Finasteride. Proscar is 5mg finasteride. So if you cut them into perfect 1/4ths, you should be getting 1.25mg of finasteride per dose, so it should be just as effective as 1mg Finasteride.
Again, this is what I do and I've seen good results.
