Using Propecia

Hi,

Hopefully I can get some advice from someone. I’m 36 & currently have baldish area from the front through to near the back, although it is relatively narrow compared to some men, in that I still have a good thick area around the sides & back of the head that go further up. I also have a fair amount of hair still on the top of my head, many normal hairs along with a vast amount of see through hairs which gives the appearance of fuzz. If I dye my hair it looks just passable on top. Oh, it has been like that for about 9 years.

Now I read a little about Propecia (Finasteride) & decided to try it out. I bought the 5mg version & so far have only taken two in two days, however it has been hard to find out exactly what dosage I should be taking, it seems to vary (via other websites) between 1 & 5mg. Should I be taking 5mg or should I cut them in half for a 2.5mg dose?

The see through hair that I currently have which seems to grow at half the rate of my ‘normal’ hair, will that be affected by the drug? Finally, how soon are side effects noticeable?

Sorry for all the questions but I still a relative newbie to these hair drugs. :)

Hi Dan,

Propecia is Finasteride in 1mg tablets. Proscar is Finasteride in 5mg tablets. What some people do to save money is get Proscar (or generic) and cut the pills into quarters.

The side effects from finasteride happen in a very small number of men. Around 2-3%, which is not that much higher than the number of people who get them from a placebo. If you do experience any, it's hard to say when. Everybody's body is different.
