View Full Version : Hair regrowth around scar, possible need for FUE in future?

I had a mole removed about a month ago, and the actual scar is healing very thin and good. The hair is growing right up to the edge of the scar from the top, and even at some points looks like it is growing through it. My concern is that underneath the scar, there is patches where the hair is scarcely coming in, and even patches where no stubble is visible. Can you shed some light as to how hair grows around scars, could the surgery have put the hairs beneath the incision into the resting phase. I have been worried about their growth and realize it's way too soon to start thinking about FUE to fix the scar, although I realize it may be a solution if the hair doesn't return to its normal growth. Any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.

Where was the mole removed from? Your scalp? Face? Unless I misread what you wrote, it doesn't look like you're specifying that.
And yes, you can get hair transplanted into scars, we frequently do that for patients who have large scars on their scalp after surgery and it looks pretty good.

The mole was above my ear on my scalp, sorry.

Ah, well yeah that can be taken care of pretty easily if it's bothering you that much. Have you considered just letting the hair grow a little longer so it covers it up? That's a pretty inexpensive fix. ;)

Yea I plan on doing that in the mean time, but was wondering if I can expect better hair growth from under neath where it seems to be way less dense. I can see stubble right next to the scar from the underside, but even more under that there are spaces where the hair doesn't seem to be growing in naturally, is this because of the surgery, the stitches, or just natural and I just need to be patient?

There are so many factors involved, there's really no way to tell based upon your description. I think the only thing you can do is wait and see how the hair grows back. If it grows back through the scar, you're good to go. If not, you way want to evaluate getting it transplanted.
This doesn't apply exactly to your situation, but I know the doctors here have been working on methods to get hair to grow through scars, like this "trichophytic closure" of a wound. (http://www.baldingblog.com/2006/04/11/trichophytic-closure-photos/) Kinda neat to see.
