Hey all,

First of all the classy words that the balding blog + forum are just awesome. Thx so much for putting time into it.

I dont know how many people are taking Nizoral out there. Judging from many other forums I feel that there is a huge hype about it. So since we all are victims of hypes I bought it and I must admit I like it very much. Allright enough of these words lets come to facts:

If Dr. Rassman or Mark would be so nice to have a look at this:

http://www.hairlosstalk.com/download/nizoral.pdf

I am from social science and sadly not from medical science and cannot judge wehther the data collected there are sort of reliable. Would it be possible to comment it cause in my opinion Nizoral sounds MORE than worth a try.

My hair has significantly improved and yes I mean SIGNIFICANTLY improved since the use of it. (by use I define 3 times a week) I look into the mirror and cant stop looking cause its just great. Sadly the error can be that it is more the effect of the aminexil that I use daily. So it might be that the good effect was because of the aminexil stuff. (I started using both 12 months ago at the same time) Also I had dread locks which caused some traction and thining and I have cut em 12 months ago. Might well be that the only reason why my hair was thining was due to traction alopecia and that the medications have nothing to do with it and that the thickening of my hair was just natural.

So possible errors over errors in terms of my personal experience. Thas why I wanna know if there is some "science" behind this study.

And to all the people out there that are really sad with your hair loss: Guys dont be. Its not all about looking good or about being attractive to the other gender. Have a beer talk with friends and enjoy!

Thanks for you attention.

Hi Lain, thanks for writing.

I'm reading over the PDF right now but I wanted to preemptively link this post on the baldingblog (http://www.baldingblog.com/2008/07/03/nizoral-ketoconazole-and-minoxidil/) where Dr Rassman spoke a little bit about this particular PDF. Short answer? It's quite a bit too small of a study to come to any serious conclusion, as the author of the PDF notes when they say...

The clinical significance of the results awaits further controlled study in a larger group of subjects.

As someone who isn't a doctor though, I'm just wondering how it works. The active ingredient in it, ketoconazole, is an anti-fungal. Is there a lot of hair loss associated with fungal infections? I don't know.

I'll post more after I read the PDF. I mean, if I've got anything useful to add anyway.

I see. Then the study is not really that representive. Yeah thats a very good question on how a fungus treatment would stop hair loss. What you probably know is that when taken ketoconazole orally that it inhibits the binding of androgens to receptors in the body and this would include the binding of DHT to hair-follicle receptors. What that means when puting it into a cream? No clue, not a doctor sadly. If putting things into creams and applying em on your scalp would always work I guess a dutasteride cream would be selling very good.

Allright thanks for your time.

Well, Ketoconazole is an FDA approved drug as a fungal treatment so I don't think that there's too much of a risk if you want to try it out. It's just not approved for hair loss treatment and there really aren't any conclusive enough studies on whether it's got any potential to help treat hair loss.

But you can bet your bottom dollar that they're working on some studies to get it approved as a hair loss treatment. If they could compete with minoxidil, they'd do quite well on the market.
