Hi everybody,

I wanted to show you guys an example of a patient that came in today and had a miniaturization test done. For those who aren't familiar with what that is, check out this thread for more info. (http://baldingforum.com/showthread.php?t=234)

This man came in for a consult today saying that his hairline was looking asymmetrical and he wasn't happy with it. He's getting married and want's a full head of hair for the wedding.

Dr. Rassman did a miniaturization test on him which you can see the results of below.

After doing the test and evaluating the results, Dr. Rassman advised the patient to go on Propecia for a year so he can see if drug therapy will work. When he comes back in a year, we can compare these photos with those and make an informed decision whether surgery would be right for this patient or whether drug therapy will be enough for him.

Here are some photos of the patients head from the eyebrows up so you can get an idea of what this level of miniaturization looks like.

The good thing is, you guys can do this from your house using almost the exact same technology that we use here in the office. If you upload your photos to these forums and post them like I explain how to do here, (http://baldingforum.com/showthread.php?t=14) one of our doctors would be more than happy to interpret your results and give you and idea of where to go next.

Best of luck,

-Mark

I don't see the photos. Does anyone else not see them?

They should be working for you now. There was a funky permissions issue with them but I got it figured out.

Very nice Mark. My Celestron is already on its way. Cant wait. Is there anything noticeable to us non pros that you can point out here to look for in our tests?

Hmm, I might be doing something wrong, but I still don't see it. Is it supposed to load automatically?

What type of pattern is this hair loss...this fellow isnt receeding and doesnt have a bald spot as such, he just seems to be thinning out all over. When you look at the pictures though you can definitely see that more than 20% of the hairs are "minature."

With this type of loss, how could you do transplant surgery? I take it there does not need to be a totally bald patch of skin to do it...?

The thing is, if someone with this type of hair loss did have a transplant, wouldn't the rest of the original hairs on the crown eventually fall out leaving only a thin spread of transplanted hairs eventually...I guess it could buy some time with finasteride...

I have ordered the microscope myself...

Thanks for the pics anway.

Mark, can you please edit a couple of photos and draw lines explaining what we are seeing? Take pictures B for instance, how much miniaturization do we see there?

I've actually got a big post lined up about how to evaluate your own miniaturization the same way the doctors here do. I'm just clearing it factually with the doctors right now to make sure that I didn't write anything that's incorrect.

I'll get it up as soon as possible. Ideally what we want is to empower you guys to make the same sort of scientific judgments that the doctors here do every day.
