Hey guys,

So this is my first post on this website. Just want to start out saying that I'm 19 years old, and have been noticing my hair falling out for about 2 and a half years now (picking hair off of my keyboard while typing this). Everytime I take a shower, tons of it falls out. I notice it in my sink and on my counter top all the time, and all over my floor in my bedroom. It even collects in my dryer for some reason. And when I run my hand through my hair, there's usually about 5-7 strands in my hand afterwards . For the first year or so, I wasn't too worried about it. I thought it was normal for someone my age to lose hair here and there, but in the past year, I've been noticing my hairline (mainly on the right side of my head) starting to thin and recede greatly. I have fairly long hair, and more and more every day, I notice my bangs on the right side are much shorter and thinner than other areas on my head. I'm not sure if it's because stress or genetics. Most men on both sides of my family have thick heads of hair, although my brother and I are both thinning.

My question is; is this something to worry about? Are there any relatively inexpensive treatments for someone with my condition? I've considered shaving my head or cutting my hair really short so its not so noticeable, but I don't have the face or the right shape head to pull off the shaved look. I went to the pharmacy to get some rogaine foam or something similar, but all I could find was only products to treat balding of the top or back of the scalp. This is greatly depressing me guys.

Any advice?

-Derek

There are two FDA approved drugs for hair loss. Minoxidil and Finasteride. You can see a doctor to get finasteride and minoxidil is available over the counter. They don't work as well in the hairline as they do in the crown, but they do help. Aside from that, the only option is a hair transplant.
