Hi, I'm just wondering how many of our members take Propecia, and what the results were? Also, if there are any side effects, please post. Thanks.

I've been taking Finasteride for the last two years. I've had no side effects and my hair is still looking decent. Can't really say whether it's helped out a lot or not because I haven't really paid much attention to it over the years.

Took it for seven days, developed breast swelling. The doctor who prescribed it to me didn't even look at my hair. I went to another doctor, his assistant did trichioanalysis, and diagnosed me trachilliomania areata. Asked me to start on rogaine for few months. I had negligible miniaturization with a little wide part at crown. I still dont understand why I am losing so much hair?

Yeah, my biggest fear right now is taking Propecia and getting side effects. Your situation sounds kind of like mine because of the low amount of miniaturization. I have less than 20% miniaturization, yet I've lost a good 60% of my hair density.
What is trachilliomania areata? Do you mean trichotillomania - pulling out of own hair? I've never heard of trachilliomania areata, because areata signifies autoimmune effects of hair loss, such as alopecia areata.

Sorry for the spell error.English is not my first language you see. I haven't actually lost hair density, Infact my hair density is higher than average, around 1.6 hair/mm2. Thing is I'm losing a lot of hair, including sides and back, which worries me. Doctor said that some people lose a lot of hair after every 5-6 years (because of hair cycle I guess), and they come back. Also my hair are thinner at roots, which you can see even without microscope. To this he said when hair is about to fall, dermal papilla cells move up, so thinning shaft is normal (I doubt it though!).
Areata means "patchy" I guess, I have a wide part near crown, which somewhat look like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/62/Trichotillomania.jpg) image, just a little smaller in size.
Thing is I used to pull my hair just to see if I'm losing hair at crown, several times a day for over an year. So may be, all I have is Trichotillomania.
My father is in late 40s and have a decent amount of hair, diffuse hair loss with no bald spot. All of his brothers have same kind of hair loss and is hardly noticable. My granddad was NW3-4 A in his late 60s, and had awesome hair(as seen in pics) in his 40s.Maybe he lost hair because of his chronic illness (He had cancer).ABSOLUTELY no hair loss at maternal side. So hairloss came as a shock to me!
And I certainly had side effects with finasteride, I didn't even know that finasteride can have side effects. When I got lumps in chest, I called my doctor and he prompted me to stop finasteride. Later, I found that my lack of libido ,low ejaculation and very mild ED was because of finasteride.
btw, I'm 19 years old.:)
PS:I seriously apologize for my pathetic English

I was on Proscar, the entire 5mg dose for about 14 years before I switched to Avodart about 4 years ago. If anything, I get more aroused. Besides that, I've never had any adverse side effects. It's a very safe drug in my opinion. I don't think it has grown much hair back, but I do have more hair now than I did 18yrs ago.
