shaving your head? Or at least keeping your hair close cropped, almost like a skinhead.
In my eyes completely shaving you head gives you a bad indication on how your hair loss is and also long hair give a bad indication because the hairs may cover your thinning spots. By indication I mean just by going through them and looking at them. If you use a miniaturization test they should be 1 cm I think to be able to diagnose properly.

But surely if I shaved my head to a crew cut I could clearly tell where I've lost hair? Or would doing this actually make it look worse than it really is?
It certinly depends on each person however when David Beckham has short hair he looks like this:

When his hair is long nobody would mention that he would suffer from hair loss! So shorter hair can make it look worse sometimes for sure!

I look somewhat like that at the moment.
If that is the case then longer hair should give you a better look :)
It's easier to see whether you're balding, and see the pattern of it when your hair is cut short. But that also means that if you are balding it's going to be much more noticeable.
