I have a couple of questions regarding Hair Transplants....

I have seen all of your before and after pics....and that of many other doctors online. Some of the results are amazing, but I was wondering what happens 5 or 10 years down the line if they continue to lose hair.

For example...lets say someone is a Norwood 3, and has a small procedure to fill in and fix their hairline (800 grafts)...what would it look like if they continued to lose their hair (even on propecia)?

Do you have any picture examples of what that looks like? Im just trying to understand the worst case scenario...and have a visual example of what things could be like down the road if i get a transplant now.

If at some point down the road I continued to lose my hair, and just decide to shave my head...is a fue procedure going to be enough to visually hide any scar from the donor area, or will it always be noticeable? How big would the scar need to be for a procedure of about 800 grafts?

In your experience, what is the potential % of losing more hair from the surgery itself (in either donor or recipient area by someone in their late 20's on propecia.)

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Hi Random,

Basically, when you get a transplant you're moving hair from the "permenant" area of your scalp to the areas where you're losing hair. This means that the transplanted hair still "thinks" that it's in the permenant area and won't fall out.

So if you got 800 grafts in the front of your hair and lost the remaining hair behind it, well, it would look just about how you'd expect it to. That's why all of our patients take finasteride of some sort, to prevent that from happening.

According doctor Rassman....... "Basically, if Propecia isn’t retaining hair as it once did, you’ve got 3 options: hair transplant, minoxidil, and prayer."

I've heard of some patients switching to Dutasteride or taking it concurrently with finasteride, however that's a decision that should always be made under the guidance of a doctor.

As far as losing hair from the surgery itself, frequently called "Shock loss", this used to happen a lot more than it does now. Dr. Rassman has all his patients taking Finasteride before they have surgery to prevent it from occuring and it works quite well.

Hope that answers your questions,

-Mark
