Hi I am 25 years old. For the past year I have been on and off a contraceptive call Estelle 35 (supposed to impove skin) and have (2 months ago) switched to Tri Feme a tri phasic pill.

For the past 4 months I have noticed a lot of hair loss , what I would usually lose in a 4-5day period I'm losing after a shower .

I have a (highly recommended) dermatogist referral but can not get an appointment for 3 months.

I was wondering if there is anything that I can do in the meantime to stop the loss as my hair is getting noticably thinner. Should I stay off the Estelle 35 or go back on to it ... I do not want to rely on having to take this to keep my hair... will my body sort its self out ? My doctor has given me Beta- Scalp to try 2x/day (as i have dandruff/some sort of film on my scalp). And I am using Neutogena "T-Gel" shampoo.

Any advice would be much appreciated !

p.s. All hormone , thyroid fxn, micronutrient, LFTs came back normal.

I had experienced the same kind of problem I am now 27, but about 4 years ago I had went to my GYN and got a Depo Injection for birth control. I had already had my son and did not want another child for some time, :0)

I had beautiful hair, despite coloring alot, highlights, you know the usual blow drys, my hair was I would call healthy. I noticed that may hair began to fall out more and more, in one occasion my mother was cleaning my shower and came crying to me to get help as she had a clump of hair in her hand that she retrieved from the shower drain.

I strongly believe the injection did it for me, I've never had this loss stop since. I now have a daughter who is 2 and they say pregnancy can bring about hairloss, but my loss has not stopped. I am scared to awake bald one day. You can see my scal p through my hair and if I pick it up you see like bald streaks as I dont have enough to cover my head:0(

I am seeing a dermatologist now, who told me to use the Rogaine, I have to try that, he also suggested that in Europe it is now approved for woman to use Propecia although not yet FDA approved here. he said 2.5 mg has proven effective, I have yet to research this, the only downfall is if you are of child bearing age you may want to think about it...I have 2 kids and do not plan on getting pregnant again but he was still reluctant and said to try the Rogaine first, and then if no success he would have me sign something and give me the rx.

Any female you know on Propecia?

CMAR,

Thanks for that advice. I have not yet had children and would like to some day, but it is concerning that your hairloss has not stopped!

I am seeing a dermatoligist in a few weeks so hopefully he will be proactive in suggesting a good treatment !

All the best with the rogaine (let me know if you see any improvement) , I really hope it works. I am also going to try the lavender oil mixture.

Hi everyone,

In women the treatment we usually advise is some sort of Minoxidil (Rogaine). We don't prescribe any form of finasteride to women for one important reason. It can cause severe birth defects. I think the only women I've ever heard of having been prescribed finasteride for hair loss had hysterectomies.

It's really something you should discuss with your doctor, but it sounds like you may have just had a bad reaction to the drug. You may also simply be having stress-related hair loss which nearly always grows back just fine. I don't know if you've been stressed out recently but it's something to think about.
