I saw this post on baldingblog:

Just wondering if anyone could share their experiences of how to do this and any pictures.

As Dr. Rassman states in that blog, we had a patient come in who would use Henna ink to give a sort of temporary tattoo on his head and it was pretty convincing. I'll see if I can dig up some photos when I get into the office on monday.
Thanks for checking out the forum!

Hi.
Could a well performed dotted tatoo onto a widen scar create an illusion and hid the scar to some extent?

Most of the tattoos I see are horrible tattoo jobs, but sometimes people get an artist to do the job (one fairly bald man can in to the office with a great Henna tattoo which made him look like he had hair. I had to touch it to be sure that I was seeing as it was that good. Most people who use the tattoo do this to manage scars like the post we did on Baldingblog a while ago:

As repair work seems to be most of the focus for tattooing, I thought a review of repair techniques might produce some value for those who are interested:

I would really appreciate seeing photos of tattoos that mimics scalp hair!

And believe me, we'd love to show them. Unfortunately the patient didn't sign a photo release form so we'd be breaching patient confidentiality if we posted them here.
For what it's worth, I'm a pretty big skeptic about these things. Dr Rassman came in my office and told me about it and I took it with a grain of salt but when I saw the pictures I was really blown away. It looked surprisingly good. If I recall correctly he used henna ink to do the hair pattern and he even went so far as to take some hair and glue it to his head to give the appearance of a buzz cut.
It sounds like a real Macgyver type of job but it was pretty darn convincing.

My studio routinely does scalp tattoos, and very natural-looking. We have matched all colors of hair, to even include "highlights" as the hair color changes to the rear and temple area. We use "real" tattoo ink, not the Henna (which has itself developed many problems with people) nor "cosmetic" ink that fades and turns red or blue. We have had huge success with this, and we are treating clients fom all over the US. So don't let anyone tell you it's bad for you, it fades, it's not natural, etc. It depends on the equipment, the pigments, and the experience of the artist. Just do your homework, and just don't go anywhere to get this done. Your "average" tattoo studio or permanent cosmetics studio do not have the equipment, nor the knowledge and experience to perform this procedure.

Hi Mark:
I have posted some photos on my profile, but I'm not sure if anyone can see them except for me. I have also sent photos to Dr. Rassman of this tattoo procedure that I have done. If you did not receive them or can't view them, let me know how to get them to you. I have made many happy men! I love helping them. Thanks. Mark

Hi there,
Your photos seem to be visible to all members.
Can you provide some detail about how the procedure is done? Do you use a typical tattoo machine or something different?

Hi Mark:
Being termed “The Hybrid Result of Custom Tattooing and Micropigmentation,” 3I have developed the Artistry Concepts Hybrid Method (ACHMŪ). The Artistry Concepts Hybrid Method (ACHMŪ) is a hand-made custom designed system (patent pending) that truly mimics follicle size with precision and detail that is not available commercially. With specially formulated tattoo pigments, I have achieved amazing hair replication detail. Micropigmentation specialists are deeming this method “impossible to duplicate.” The ACHMŪ is nearly undetectable except by touch, is a permanent procedure and only requires one application with no later touch-ups/applications. This custom designed equipment and specialized effect cannot be attained from your local permanent cosmetics salon or tattoo artist.
The Artistry Concepts Hybrid Method (ACHMŪ) is successfully used on any level of baldness, from a simple receding hairline to total alopecia. Any skin color, hair color, HT scarring or thin areas, or diffuse thinners will greatly benefit from this method.
Thanks for asking, and I am excited that I can help so many men that are so stressed about their hair loss.....

I looked at the website, and what I don't understand is how do you have this done to your head at a young age? Won't it look a bit odd when you are older having the same color, and look to your head?
The thing that concerns me most about these type of procedures is that tattoos naturally fade. If you ever get this done, it's HIGHLY recommended that you continually use sunscreen on your scalp because UV light is a big cause of faded tattoos.
I have a tatoo on my leg and I rarely go out in the sun so it looks pretty much like the day I got it 10 years ago. But I've got some tattoos on my arms that see much more sun and it's amazing how much they fade due to it.
So yeah, if you really make sure to avoid sun damage, these tattoos might hold up fairly well. But again, that's something that the person getting the tattoo really needs to understand, because once a tattoo is faded, it's hard to do anything to make it look better.

:)Hey Mark:
Just got around to addressing fading. And yes, you are 100% correct, this is a concern. Yes, your hair tattoo will absolutely fade the first year if you cook your scalp in the sun. Don't get your scalp sunburn the first year, and your hair replication will look great forever. And regarding regular tattoos (I have also been doing regular tattooing for 30 years), there are quite a few tattoo pigments that are available, and like anything, you get what you pay for. Tattoos fade for various reasons (1) inexperienced artist not familiar with skin depths; (2) cheaply manufactured ("watered" down) pigments; (3) use of incorrect type and/or needle size during application. I have tattoos on my arms that that look as good as they did when I got them in Thailand and Hong Kong over 30 years ago. Hence, experienced tattoo artist and high-quality pigments. But most importantly, avoid getting these hair tattoos with COSMETIC pigments. They in fact are intended to fade in a few years, and in some case, turn blue and green. I have never used cosmetic pigments, only my own mix of the the best tattoo pigments available. Hope this helps.
