I visited your LA offices a few months ago, I was 26 years old and you said that 800 grafts in the temple regions would do the trick. You described my hairloss as:

Norwood Clas: 3
Hair Color: Black
Skin Color: Fair
Wave: Straight
Thickness: Fine
Density: 2.0 hairs per mm(squared)
Laxity: Average
40% miniaturization on the front, top, and crown

I've been on Propecia for about 9 months now (originally came to see you at the 6 month mark.) Hopefully you could answer a few questions I have...

1. If at the 6 month point (when i saw you) I still had 40% miniaturization...is there a good chance it will stay where it is...or will the 2nd 6 months (to reach a full year on the medicine) be enough time for the miniaturization to improve? Would adding Rogain help?

2. You said that currently my final balding pattern is unknown...at what stage can you make an educated guess. That information would greatly influence my choice of when to have a procedure...what to do..etc. I would hate to get the results I want now..and then 5 years from now have some weird hair loss pattern because I did a surgery at 26 years old and kept losing hair.

3. Is it worthwhile to wait until the 1 year mark before deciding about a hair transplant?

4. If I wanted to keep my procedure confidential...is it possible to drive myself home post op? Or would I need to let someone in on my surgery, so that I could get a ride?

5. How long does the redness/pinkness last in the recipient area post op? How many days before I could wear a hat to hide the surgery? Are the staples on the donor area noticeable in direct sunlight?

6. What are the potential risks of losing more hair from the surgery itself (shock loss?)

7. If my goals are to have thicker hair in the temples, and the ability to have both solid thick bangs again (for when I want to wear it down)...and a well constructed hairline (when I wear my hair up), but less concerned with a crazy low hairline...is that manageable without screwing myself later if there is future hair loss?

Thanks! And hopefully this is the correct forum for this type of stuff . :)

Most men see full results from Finasteride at around the 9-12 month mark, although we have seen people who continue to see improvement out to two years. Also, most men taking finasteride will simply see a decrease or stop of their hair loss, but a smaller percentage do actually see some regrowth from Finasteride.

Rogaine can help as well.

3. Is it worthwhile to wait until the 1 year mark before deciding about a hair transplant?

I think that's a decision that can only be made by you and your doctor, however that is a fairly typical arrangement.

4. If I wanted to keep my procedure confidential...is it possible to drive myself home post op? Or would I need to let someone in on my surgery, so that I could get a ride?

We don't allow people to drive themselves home post-op because you will be given sedatives during the surgery that can stay in your system for a few hours. You can have someone give you a ride, or I'm sure arrangements can be made for a cab or something like that. I'd call up Mach or Silvia at 800-NEW-HAIR to find out for sure.

5. How long does the redness/pinkness last in the recipient area post op? How many days before I could wear a hat to hide the surgery? Are the staples on the donor area noticeable in direct sunlight?

It's slightly different for each person, and it also depends on how many grafts you have placed. The "after your procedure" section on this page at newhair.com has a lot of good info. (http://newhair.com/treatment/basics-procedure.asp)

For that number of grafts in the temples, usually the redness lasts a few days at most, and most people only notice it if they are actually looking for it.

As for the staples/sutures in the donor area, we usually recommend that people grow out their hair in the back so that you can lay the hair over the area. This works quite well.

6. What are the potential risks of losing more hair from the surgery itself (shock loss?)

Dr. Rassman has written a lot about shock loss on the blog. This is a pretty relevant post..... (http://www.baldingblog.com/2005/08/10/shock-hair-loss-from-transplantation/)

I will assume that you are a student of college age (under 30) in answering this quesstion. If you are older, then shock hair loss is less of a risk. If you take Propecia, I have found that the likelihood of having reactive hair loss is significantly less likely. In the days before Propecia I used to see it all of the time in young men. For those who are on the drug before surgery, there appears to be a protective effect that stops the hair transplant shock loss that plagued the men prior to the introduction of the drug. There are few guarantees in medicine, but I do not remember any person in recent times that was on Propecia that had significant reactive hair loss.

Hope that helps.

7. If my goals are to have thicker hair in the temples, and the ability to have both solid thick bangs again (for when I want to wear it down)...and a well constructed hairline (when I wear my hair up), but less concerned with a crazy low hairline...is that manageable without screwing myself later if there is future hair loss?

That's absolutely manageable. The biggest risk that you face when getting a hair transplant is if you transplant hair to the front of your head, and then continue balding. What happens is that the transplanted hair will stay, but the other hair will fall out. Not a good thing. Fortunately drugs like Finasteride help out really well with this. But you do need to realize that if you get a transplant, you'll need to take Finasteride to prevent further loss. At least until a better drug is found.

Hope that helps out. There's one question I didn't answer because I'm not totally sure on the answer, but I'll get back to you ASAP about it.

I just spoke with Dr. Rassman about your second question and he said that it would be best that he see you and go over the details of your master plan with you in person.
